Do you remember when you last replaced your toothbrush? If you paused for thought, chances are it’s time for a new brush. The ADA recommends that a toothbrush is replaced every three to four months, or if any bristles appear to be frayed or broken.
Make sure to find the right kind of bristles for you as a brush that is too hard may damage the enamel. Always rinse off any remaining toothpaste from the brush and place in an upright position, allowing it to air dry when possible. Avoid frequently covering your toothbrush as moist environments encourage bacteria growth and keep separate from other brushes to avoid cross-contamination.
Rest assured, simply rinsing the toothbrush in warm water should take care of toothpaste and food particles. For a more thorough cleaning, the head of the brush may be immersed for about 15 minutes in mouthwash—but any longer than that may damage the bristles. The use of dishwashers, microwaves or ultraviolet lights is not advised as it may damage the toothbrush.
