Removing Tartar

Posted .

Many things play into your oral health, but one of the most prevalent is whether or not you allow plaque to build up and turn into tartar. If you do this, it opens up your mouth to the possibility of contracting some serious oral health problems.

To help you avoid this, our team at NR Family Dentistry has put together this post about tartar and why you need to see Dr. Swapna Nadikuda on a regular basis to avoid its long-term effects.

What is tartar?

Tartar is essentially hardened plaque. When you don’t do as good a job as you should of keeping up with your oral health regimen, any plaque that isn’t removed hardens and turns into tartar. This is such a hard substance that you can’t remove it at home. It requires the expertise of our team here at NR Family Dentistry to do so without damaging enamel and your gums.

Why is it bad?

When plaque turns into tartar, it’s a breeding ground for bacteria. These are the same bacteria that cause gum disease, tooth loss, and tooth decay. If you let too much tartar build up in your mouth, you’re likely to end up with some serious oral health complications.

How do I prevent it?

The best way to prevent tartar is using a three-pronged approach: brush regularly, floss, and use mouthwash. These three acts together work well to combat tartar build up, and when you come in every six months to see Dr. Swapna Nadikuda you’ll get a comprehensive exam to ensure you don’t have any built up in your mouth.
